Pugh Quarry, located near the town of Custar in Wood County, Ohio, is a well-known commercial limestone and dolostone quarrying operation that later became celebrated among mineral collectors. Geologically, the quarry exposes shallow Paleozoic bedrock units consisting primarily of Silurian-aged dolostones and limestones, where mineral-rich hydrothermal and groundwater solutions circulated through vugs, cavities, and fracture systems. Mineralogically, the site is famous for producing exceptional, highly aesthetic specimens of golden to amber-colored calcite crystals, often accompanied by notable occurrences of fluorite, celestine, barite, and sphalerite. Historically, commercial quarrying and stone extraction operations developed during the region's industrial expansion in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and while large-scale industrial output eventually evolved, the site gained enduring renown within the Midwestern mineralogical community for its outstanding cavity-filling crystal assemblages.
