Calcite

specimen number:
9862028

location:
Magma Mine, Superior, Arizona, USA

description:
Lustrous crystals of calcite on a hematite rich matrix. In good condition.

The Magma Mine, located in Superior, Arizona, is a historic underground copper mining operation with development dating back to the late 19th century around 1875, though major commercial production surged following the formation of the Magma Copper Company in 1910. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within a complex sequence of Precambrian diabase sills and Paleozoic sedimentary strata that were intruded by Laramide-age granitic porphyries, creating a rich zone of hydrothermal copper veins, replacement bodies, and supergene enrichment zones. Throughout its long operational history, the mine became renowned for producing massive quantities of high-grade copper, as well as choice mineral specimens such as calcite and barite.
