The Pugh Quarry, located near Custar in Wood County, Ohio, is a well-known industrial site that has gained fame for its exceptional mineral specimens. Geologically, the quarry excavates the Middle Devonian Dundee Limestone and the underlying Detroit River Group, which are part of the carbonate sequences of the Michigan Basin. The site is highly regarded for producing aesthetic crystals of honey-colored calcite, often occurring as sharp rhombohedrons or scalenohedrons, and delicate blue to colorless celestine (celestite) that formed within cavities and vugs through hydrothermal or groundwater precipitation. Historically, the quarry has been operated by the Pugh Quarry Company and later the Olen Corporation, providing crushed stone and aggregate for regional construction since the mid-20th century. While it remains a working industrial facility, it is historically significant to the mineralogical community for the high quality of its specimens, particularly those recovered during the peak collecting years of the 1960s through the 1990s. Today, it stands as a classic Ohio locality, representing the rich sedimentary mineralogy of the Maumee River valley region.
