Cavnic in Maramures, Romania, is part of the Baia Mare mining district, a region with a long history of mining that dates back to the medieval period and continued into the late 20th century. The deposits are associated with hydrothermal vein systems hosted in volcanic rocks, where mineralizing fluids introduced gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper into fractures and breccia zones. Extensive underground workings were developed over centuries to follow these complex vein networks. The geology is characterized by epithermal mineralization, producing a wide range of sulfide and sulfosalt minerals along with secondary species formed in oxidized zones. Cavnic became well known for both its economic production and its diverse mineral assemblages, making it one of the classic mining localities in the Carpathian region.
