Calcite with Fluorite

specimen number:
2092183

location:
Elmwood complex, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA

description:
Attractive grouping of lustrous partly gemmy calcite crystals with minor fluorite. Minimal cleaving present, this still in good condition. Barite present as well.

The Elmwood Mine, located in Smith County, Tennessee, is part of the Central Tennessee Zinc District and is globally recognized for producing world-class mineral specimens. Geologically, it is a Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) deposit hosted within the Ordovician-aged Knox Group dolostone. The mineralization occurred when hydrothermal fluids moved through brecciated rock and dissolution cavities, depositing large, well-formed crystals in open vugs. The mine is famous for its distinct association of translucent "cognac" colored calcite, purple fluorite, and lustrous sphalerite, often found on a matrix of white barite. Historically, industrial mining for zinc began at Elmwood in the early 1970s under the New Jersey Zinc Company. The complex has seen several changes in ownership, including Pasminco and Nyrstar, and has experienced periods of closure and reopening due to fluctuating zinc prices. Commercial operations for zinc concentrate continue into the present day, while the mine remains a primary source for some of the most sought-after mineral specimens in the United States.
