The Ozark-Mahoning tract in Hardin County, Illinois, was a major part of the southern Illinois fluorspar district. Large-scale exploration and development by the company began in the late 1930s, with its processing and mining operations running continuously under various corporate structures from 1939 until final closure in 1995. Geologically, the area is characterized by complex faulting within Paleozoic sedimentary strata. The mineral deposits occur primarily as flat-lying bedded replacement (manto) bodies and vertical vein systems within Mississippian limestones and sandstones, formed by hydrothermal solutions that deposited rich concentrations of fluorite, sphalerite, galena, and barite.
