Calcite with Hematite
specimen number:
2013004
location:
Pilot Knob Iron Mine, Iron Co., Missouri, USA
description: An outstanding old time example from this long closed and important iron mine in Missouri. Reddish lustrous translucent scalenohedral crystals of calcite measuring to 3.5 cm in size are set nicely across the top of a brecciated matrix with hematite. Minor pyrite is present as well. This is in terrific condition all around with just slight micro-cleaving on one calcite crystal. Specimens such as this from this locality are extremely rare on the market today
