Calcite with Hematite

specimen number:
2062007

location:
Bradley Mine, Dickinson Co., Michigan, USA

description:
An open pocket within this hematite matrix is lined with colorless crystals of calcite. In good condition. Collected in May, 1999 from a boulder in talus at the base of the north wall on the east end of the mine.

The Bradley Mine in Dickinson County, Michigan was part of the iron mining industry of the Menominee Range in the Upper Peninsula. Mining in the district developed in the late 19th century to extract iron ore from banded iron formation hosted in Precambrian rocks. Underground workings supplied ore for regional iron and steel production during the peak years of Great Lakes iron mining. Like many mines in the area, operations eventually declined as richer deposits were exhausted and mining activity shifted to other regions.
