The Groveland Mine, located in Dickinson County within the Menominee Iron Range of Michigan, began early exploratory work in 1881 and initiated small-scale shipments in the late 1880s, though operations faced repeated closures due to the low-grade nature of the ore. It was extensively revitalized in the 1950s by the Hanna Mining Company, which constructed a large beneficiation and pelletizing plant that operated until its final closure in 1981. Geologically, the deposit sits within Precambrian-aged metamorphic sequences of the Huronian Supergroup, consisting of heavily folded and faulted iron-formations. Mineralogically, the ore is characterized by hard, gray, siliceous material composed primarily of fine-grained magnetite and hematite interbedded with quartz and various silicate minerals.
