Calcite with Hematite

specimen number:
2292240

location:
Egremont, Cumbria, England, UK

description:
The top of this hematite rich matrix is covered with scalenohedral crystals of calcite to 1.0 cm in size. Red inclusions of hematite are present throughout. Some cleaving present, overall in good condition.

The Egremont mining district, located in West Cumbria, England, was a major producer of high-grade iron ore and is globally recognized for its exceptional hematite and calcite specimens. Geologically, the deposit consists of massive replacement bodies, veins, and flats hosted within the Carboniferous Limestone Supergroup, where the limestone unconformably overlies Ordovician Skiddaw Group basement rocks. Iron-rich hydrothermal fluids migrated along major regional fault systems, including the Florence and Ullcoats faults, dissolving the carbonate host rock and replacing it with massive, botryoidal, and specular varieties of hematite, while leaving open solution vugs where large, scalenohedral calcite crystals and quartz could form. Industrial-scale underground mining in the area accelerated rapidly during the mid-nineteenth century, with major operations like the Florence Mine, Ullcoats Mine, and Beckermet Mine utilizing extensive shaft networks to extract millions of tons of ore for the regional iron and steel industry. Commercial extraction peaked between the late 1800s and mid-1900s, followed by a gradual decline as local economic reserves were depleted, culminating in the closure of the Florence Mine in 2007, which marked the end of traditional iron ore and specimen mining in the West Cumbrian district.
