Calcite with Pyrite

specimen number:
2292256

location:
Level 11, Potosi Mine, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico

description:

An attractive combination piece collected in the early 1990s. Colorless scalenohedral crystals of calcite across a crystallized quartz matrix with crystallized golden pyrite. In good condition with very minimal cleaving present.

The Potosi mine, situated within the West Camp of the Santa Eulalia mining district in Chihuahua, Mexico, is a legendary underground operation celebrated for its remarkable carbonate-hosted polymetallic lead-zinc-silver deposits. Geologically, the locality is characterized by massive, high-grade replacement ore bodies, including extensive mantos and vertical chimneys, formed within thick Cretaceous limestone sequences that were intruded by Tertiary felsic dikes. Late-stage hydrothermal activity dissolved large portions of the limestone, creating spectacular, cavernous vugs and collapse breaches lined with specimens of pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, calcite, fluorite, and hemimorphite. Formal underground mining at the Potosi mine began around 1903 under the Chihuahua Mining Company and was later operated heavily by the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) throughout the twentieth century, serving as a primary economic driver for the region. While large-scale industrial extraction of industrial base metals ceased and operations wound down by the late 1980s and 1990s, intermittent leasing, specialized specimen mining, and artisanal recovery have continued to yield fine collector minerals into the 2020s.
