description: The Cacova Ierii deposit, situated in the Gilau Massif of the Apuseni Mountains in Cluj County, Romania, is a prominent skarn-related iron and boron occurrence. Geologically, the deposit developed within a complex contact zone where Late Cretaceous to Paleogene hypabissal granodioritic intrusive rocks (often termed banatites) cut across older basement carbonate and metamorphic sequences. This metasomatic activity generated extensive magnesian and calcic skarns. Mineralogically, the site is exceptionally famous for its boron-bearing assemblages, hosting abundant magnesian borates such as ludwigite and szaibelyite, alongside magnetite, forsterite, dolomite, calcite, and various secondary alteration products like serpentine and brucite. Historical records for the exact opening and closing dates of commercial mining operations are sparse, though the area has long been recognized in economic geology and mineralogical literature for its unique skarn evolution and large iron ore reserve potential.
Glistening small crystals of colorless calcite scattered across the top of a pyrite and sphalerite matrix. In great condition. Rare locality example, specimens from here are rarely seen available on the market today.
