Colorless rhombohedral crystals of calcite and colorless crystals of quartz across the top of matrix. In good condition. Nice for this famous old and long gone locality. Minor pyrite is present. Note the massive andradite matrix from the skarn.

The Ocna de Fier mining district in Caras-Severin County, Romania, has a remarkably long history spanning several millennia, with initial copper and iron exploitation dating back to the Bronze Age and expanding significantly through the Roman period. Commercial and industrial scale mining intensified during the Habsburg administration and continued into the modern era to supply regional iron smelting. Geologically, the deposit is one of Europe's classic contact-metasomatic skarn occurrences, situated where Late Cretaceous banatitic intrusive rocks intersected and altered Mesozoic carbonate sequences. This complex interaction produced extensive magnetite ore bodies and a diverse skarn mineral assemblage comprising over one hundred distinct mineral species, making the site internationally significant for both historical metal production and mineralogical study.
