Calcite with Quartz, Sphalerite
specimen number:
2312366
location:
Cavnic, Maramures Co., Romania
description: Cavnic is a historic mining town located in Maramures County in northwestern Romania, with archival records of mining dating back to 1336. Geologically, the deposit sits within the Neogene volcanic belt of the Gutai Mountains, where complex hydrothermal vein systems cut through volcanic and sedimentary host rocks. These mineralizing fluids deposited rich polymetallic ores containing lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver. The underground veins are world famous among mineral collectors for producing exceptional aesthetic specimens, particularly quartz, calcite, dolomite, rhodochrosite, barite, and various sulfide minerals.
An attractive combination piece with colorless translucent scalenohedral crystals of calcite measuring to 2.7 cm in size across the top of a glistening colorless gemmy crystal quartz matrix. Sphalerite is present as well. This is in excellent condition. Crystallized on both sides of the matrix.
Size: 17.0 x 16.0 x 6.0 cm (large-cabinet)
