Colorless crystals of calcite to 1.0 cm in size across the top of a sphalerite crystal matrix mostly coated with siderite. This is in good condition. Nice large combination piece.

The Herja mine, located in Maramures County, Romania (historically known as Kisbanya, while the nearby Baia Sprie was historically known as Felsobanya), was a prolific polymetallic epithermal deposit. Geologically, the deposit sits within the Neogene Baia Mare metallogenetic district of the Eastern Carpathians, consisting of a complex network of over 260 hydrothermal veins hosted in sedimentary and Neogene volcanic and subvolcanic intrusive rocks. It is renowned for complex lead, zinc, silver, and antimony mineralization yielding exceptional specimens of stibnite, quartz, and rare carbonate forms like bicolor calcite spheres. Large scale industrial mining operations at Herja expanded significantly through the 19th and 20th centuries before the mine was permanently closed in 2005.
