Calcite with Sphalerite
specimen number:
8311421
location:
Picher Field, Tri-State District, Kansas-Oklahoma, USA
description: Beautiful golden yellow double terminated slightly translucent crystals of calcite to 9.0 cm in size very aesthetic apply chert matrix with minor crystals of sphalerite. This is in terrific condition. The Picher Field, situated at the junction of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri, served as the most productive center of the Tri-State Mining District. Geologically, it is a classic Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposit where mineralizing fluids moved through Mississippian-aged cherty limestones of the Boone Formation. The locality is famous for producing sharp, lustrous galena cubes often resting upon a matrix of light pink, saddle-shaped dolomite crystals. The sphalerite found here is typically found as large, opaque black crystals known as "blackjack," though smaller, translucent crystals can exhibit a deep dark red hue frequently referred to by collectors as "ruby jack." Historically, industrial-scale mining and quarrying began after major ore discoveries in 1914, with the town of Picher being incorporated in 1918. The field was a primary global source of lead and zinc during both World Wars before large-scale operations finally ceased in 1967 due to depletion and environmental issues. As of 2026, the area is recognized for its significant industrial heritage and continues to be represented in mineralogical circles by its iconic and highly recognizable sulfide specimens.
