The Viloco Mine, also known as the Araca Mine, is located in the Loayza Province of the La Paz Department, Bolivia, and is globally recognized for producing the world's finest cassiterite crystals. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Cordillera Oriental, where hydrothermal veins containing tin and tungsten cut through Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks near the contact zone of the Araca granitic batholith. The cassiterite from this locality is celebrated for its exceptional luster, transparency, and deep "rosin" or honey-brown color, often forming sharp, multi-faceted bipyramidal crystals or complex elbow twins. Historically, the mine has been a significant producer since the early 20th century, with major industrial activity beginning around the 1910s and 1920s. While mining operations in Bolivia have faced various periods of nationalization and restructuring, Viloco remained a primary source of high-grade tin ore for decades. Today, while large-scale production has diminished compared to its peak, the mine continues to be worked by local cooperatives, and it remains the gold standard for aesthetic cassiterite specimens in the international mineral market.
