Elsmore, located near Inverell in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia, is a historic alluvial tin and gemstone mining district with operations dating back to the late 1860s and 1870s. Geologically, the area is characterized by Permian granites that intruded older meta-sediments, subsequently weathering to form extensive alluvial deposits along streams and deep leads capped by Tertiary basalt flows. Mineralogically, the district became famous for its abundant cassiterite, alongside prolific occurrences of sapphire, zircon, and tourmaline, which drew significant prospectors during the nineteenth-century Australian tin rushes.
