The quarries at Wagholi, located near Pune in the Maharashtra state of India, developed primarily to extract basaltic rock from the vast Deccan Traps for regional construction and infrastructure. Geologically, the Deccan Traps consist of massive continental flood basalts formed by massive volcanic events roughly 66 million years ago. Secondary hydrothermal alteration and low-temperature fluid circulation within the gas cavities, vesicles, and fissures of these basalt flows led to the crystallization of diverse secondary minerals. While numerous quarries throughout the Pune district yield common zeolites, the Wagholi quarries became world-famous among mineral collectors for producing exquisite specimens of cavansite, a striking blue calcium vanadium silicate that forms radiant, spherulitic crystal clusters typically perched on a contrasting white matrix of stilbite or heulandite.
