The Stoneco Portage Quarry, located in Wood County, Ohio, is a prominent limestone and dolomite extraction site that has supported the regional construction industry for many decades. Historically, the quarry was established in the early 20th century to capitalize on the massive carbonate deposits in Northwest Ohio, eventually becoming part of the Stoneco network. Geologically, the quarry excavates the Silurian-aged Lockport Dolomite and the overlying Greenfield Dolomite. These rock units were formed in ancient, shallow tropical seas and are characterized by their high magnesium and calcium content, which makes the stone ideal for high-strength concrete and asphalt applications. The site is also noted by geologists for its vugs and cavities that contain secondary minerals. Collectors have documented specimens of fluorite, celestine, and calcite from this locality. Today, the Portage Quarry remains a major producer of various grades of crushed stone, serving as a critical infrastructure hub for the surrounding Great Lakes area.
