The Sylvania Aggregates Quarry, located in Rockwood, Wayne County, Michigan, is a significant industrial site known for its high-purity silica sand and remarkable mineral specimens. Geologically, the quarry exposes the Middle Devonian Sylvania Sandstone and the underlying Bois Blanc and Amherstburg Formations, which consist of carbonate rocks and exceptionally pure quartz sandstone. The site is renowned among mineralogists for producing magnificent, large crystals of celestine (celestite), which formed within vugs and cavities of the limestone through the precipitation of strontium-rich fluids. These celestine crystals are often transparent to translucent with a delicate blue or colorless hue, reaching sizes that are among the finest in the Midwest. Historically, the quarry has been an active source of aggregate and industrial sand for several decades, with its primary modern operations expanding significantly from the mid-20th century to the present day. While it remains a functional industrial site providing materials for glass manufacturing and construction, it is celebrated in the geological community as a premier locality for Michigan celestine and associated minerals like calcite and sulfur.
