The Portage Quarry, located in Wood County, Ohio, is a historic commercial stone quarrying site that transitioned from active industrial aggregate production to become well known among regional mineral enthusiasts and recreational divers. Geologically, the quarry is excavated within Silurian-aged dolostone formations, characteristic of the flat-lying sedimentary bedrock of northwestern Ohio. Within these strata, groundwater circulation and mineralizing solutions created vugs, cavities, and ancient reef structures. These pockets frequently host attractive collections of secondary minerals, most notably well-formed crystals of celestine and calcite.
