The Maybee Quarry, located in Monroe County, Michigan, is a significant industrial stone operation with a history dating back to the late 19th century, having opened around 1899. Geologically, the quarry penetrates the Silurian-aged Raisin River Dolomite within the Bass Islands Group, a fine-grained, brownish-gray rock formed in a restricted, shallow marine environment. Mineralogically, the site is famous among collectors for cavity mineralization, producing world-class specimens of bright yellow native sulfur, along with aesthetic clusters of celestine, calcite, and strontianite. Historically, the quarry served as an important site for early American mineralogical research into the geochemical formation of native sulfur in sedimentary rocks, and it remains an active commercial aggregate producer today.
