Celestine with Sulfur
specimen number:
2092261
location:
Agrigento, Sicily, Italy
description: The Agrigento mining district, situated on the southern coast of Sicily, Italy, was a historically massive source of elemental sulfur and associated evaporite minerals. Geologically, the deposits belong to the late Miocene-age Messinian Evaporite sequence, which formed during the Messinian Salinity Crisis when the Mediterranean Sea underwent partial desiccation and precipitated thick layers of gypsum, halite, and limestone. Intense microbial reduction of these sulfate-rich beds within localized, restricted basins converted the gypsum into thick strata of native sulfur, which crystallized as bright yellow masses and sharp crystals hosted within a soft, white limestone and tripoli matrix, frequently associated with fine aragonite, celestine, and gypsum. Historically, while sulfur extraction in Sicily dates back to Roman times, industrial-scale underground shaft mining and open-cut quarrying in the Agrigento territory, including major centers like the Ciavolotta mine, boomed in the nineteenth century to supply the global chemical and sulfuric acid industries. This intensive production phase peaked between the 1830s and the 1900s, utilizing thousands of workers under difficult conditions, but the industry faced a severe decline in the mid-twentieth century due to cheaper sulfur extraction methods introduced in the United States, leading to the progressive abandonment of the workings and the permanent closure of all commercial sulfur mines in the district by the late 1980s.
A crystalline sulfur matrix, this coated with sparkling white crystals of calcite, some of these forming replacements after pseudo-hexagonal aragonite. Crystallized completely all around. There is a second-generation of sulfur crystals present, some of these are damaged as seen. Brightly fluorescent.
