Celestine with Sulfur
specimen number:

location:
Agrigento, Sicily, Italy
description: Lustrous slightly translucent prismatic terminated crystals of Celestine to just under 2.0 cm in length coming off matrix with yellow crystallized native sulfur. In good condition. Brightly fluorescent. The Agrigento province of southern Sicily, Italy, is an famous historical mining district renowned for its massive evaporite deposits and associated native sulfur, gypsum, celestine, and aragonite. Geologically, the region is situated within the evaporitic Miocene Gessoso-Solfifera Formation of the Caltanissetta Basin, which developed during the Messinian Salinity Crisis when the Mediterranean Sea desiccated and precipitated thick sequences of gypsum, halite, and bituminous marls. Secondary bacterial reduction of these sulfate beds subsequently led to the concentration of rich native sulfur ore bodies within the carbonate units. While surface gathering dates back to ancient Sicanian, Roman, and Byzantine times, organized industrial subterranean quarrying exploded in the late eighteenth century to supply international demand for sulfuric acid and gunpowder. Operations reached their peak in the late nineteenth century across vast mining complexes like Cozzo Disi and Comitini, before declining due to overseas competition and systematically shutting down through the mid to late twentieth century, with the final commercial mines officially ceasing extraction by 1988.
