The Bastnas Mines, located near Riddarhyttan in Skinnskatteberg, Vastmanland County, Sweden, comprise a historic mining area with operations dating back to the Middle Ages for iron and copper. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within Paleoproterozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that experienced intense metasomatism, forming skarn-type and REE-bearing carbonate rocks. The complex mineralogy of the site is internationally renowned among researchers and mineral collectors, as it is the type locality for several rare earth element and actinide minerals, including cerite, bastnasite, and allanite, discovered within its unique REE-thorium-bismuth mineralization.
