The Bastnas Mines, situated in the Riddarhyttan ore field of Vastmanland County, Sweden, have a long recorded history dating back to at least 1692, with intermittent mining and exploration continuing across subsequent centuries primarily for iron, copper, cobalt, and rare earth elements. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within a strongly altered Svecofennian metavolcanic succession of the Bergslagen region, where early Proterozoic magmatic and hydrothermal fluids interacted with dolomitic carbonate layers to form complex magnetite skarns. Mineralogically, Bastnas is world-famous as a type locality for rare earth element mineralogy and the cradle of cerium discovery, yielding a rich assemblage of uncommon silicate and fluorocarbonate species such as bastnasite, cerite, and various actinide- and rare-metal-bearing phases.
