Cerussite with Galena

specimen number:
1052330

location:
Friedrichssegen Mine, Lahnstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

description:

Choice old classic German specimen with crystals of cerussite, some of these showing twinning, measuring to almost 1.2 cm in size on matrix. Galena is present as well. Some damage shows, this still quite nice for such a historical specimen. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the early 20th century, if not the 19th century. The Friedrichssegen Mine near Bad Ems in Rhineland Palatinate, Germany was an important lead and silver mine developed in the 19th century within the Lahn mining district. The deposit consisted of hydrothermal veins hosted in Devonian slate and limestone, producing galena as the primary ore along with sphalerite and other sulfide minerals. Mining expanded during the industrial period with deep underground workings and modern processing facilities, and the locality became known among collectors for fine specimens of cerussite and other secondary lead minerals formed in the oxidized zone. Although mining ceased in the 20th century, Friedrichssegen remains a classic German mineral locality with significant historic importance.
