Cerussite with Malachite

specimen number:
1655491

location:
Rum Jungle, Northern Territory, Australia

description:
The top of this brecciated matrix is mostly covered with dark green botryoidal crystallized malachite. Scattered throughout are small twinned crystals of sparkling cerussite. In good condition.

Rum Jungle is a historic mining area located in the Batchelor region of the Northern Territory, Australia, situated on the southern flank of the Rum Jungle Complex. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks, specifically the carbonaceous shales and dolomites of the Namoona Group, which unconformably overlie an ancient Archaean granitic basement. The mineralization is characterized as a poly-metallic hydrothermal system, significantly enriched in uranium, copper, lead, and cobalt, which formed through the interaction of metal-rich fluids with the chemically reactive host rocks approximately 1.6 billion years ago. Historically, the site gained prominence in 1949 when a local prospector, Jack White, discovered secondary uranium minerals, leading to the establishment of Australia's first major uranium mining operation in 1954. The mine played a critical role in the global nuclear industry during the Cold War era, producing over 3,500 tonnes of uranium oxide and significant amounts of copper before closing in 1971. For mineralogists, Rum Jungle is a classic locality for rare secondary copper and uranium species, most notably the vibrant green, platy crystals of torbernite and the bright yellow crusts of saleeite. Today, the site is a major focus of environmental rehabilitation and remains a significant case study in the evolution of Proterozoic mineral systems and the history of Australian resource development.
