Palabanda, located in the Mfouati district of the Bouenza Department in the Republic of the Congo, has a history of mineral exploration and intermittent small-scale operations dating back to the mid-20th century, with intensive prospecting phases occurring in the 1940s and 1960s, followed by modern exploratory work and localized mining efforts in the 21st century. Geologically, the area is situated within the Niari Basin, where the upper Proterozoic Schisto-Calcaire Group of marine carbonate and siliciclastic rocks undergoes intense supergene weathering and hydrothermal alteration. This process has dissolved carbonate host rocks along fault zones to create karstic cavities that host rich secondary mineralization, notably yielding fine specimens of copper, lead, and zinc secondary minerals such as hemimorphite.
