description: The Unki mine, located near Shurugwi in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe, is a major modern underground producer of platinum-group metals (PGMs), along with significant base metal byproducts like nickel and copper. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Shurugwi Subchamber of the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe, an immense, Paleoproterozoic-age mafic-ultramafic layered igneous intrusion cutting across the ancient Zimbabwe Craton. The primary economic mineralization is hosted within the Main Sulfide Zone (MSZ), specifically restricted to a distinct stratabound layer of plagioclase pyroxenite positioned beneath a plagioclase websterite marker horizon. Within this zone, early magmatic segregation and later-stage hydrothermal alteration combined to concentrate base metal sulfides, such as pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite, which host rare platinum-group minerals including sperrylite, braggite, and cooperite. Historically, extensive exploratory drilling was initiated across the property by Anglo American plc during the 1970s, followed by comprehensive feasibility studies throughout the 1990s and early 2000s to delineate the massive underground ore body. Formal mine infrastructure construction began in the mid-2000s, and sequential plant commissioning commenced in late 2010. Full-scale commercial corporate production officially began in early 2011, under the management of Anglo American Platinum (later demerged as Valterra Platinum Limited). The corporate facility subsequently expanded its operational footprint through the addition of a domestic smelting complex in 2018 and an industrial concentrator debottlenecking project in 2021, and the mechanized underground operations continue to sustain steady-state extraction through 2026.
