Chrysoberyl

specimen number:
2133166

location:
Colatina, Espirito Santo, Brazil

description:
An attractive yellow green translucent lustrous twinned loose crystal grouping of chrysoberyl. In very good condition.

Chrysoberyl is a hard and durable aluminum beryllium oxide mineral that is well known for its attractive crystal forms and gem varieties, including alexandrite and cat's eye. At Colatina in Espirito Santo, Brazil, chrysoberyl is found in pegmatite and alluvial deposits associated with granitic rocks. The crystals from this region are often well formed and may display colors ranging from yellow to greenish hues, sometimes with good transparency suitable for gem cutting. Mining in the Colatina area has been carried out on a relatively small scale, with both primary and secondary deposits worked by local miners. Specimens from this locality are valued by collectors and gem enthusiasts due to their quality and the importance of Brazil as a major source of chrysoberyl.
