location:
Richardson Ranch, Jefferson Co., Oregon, USA

description:
Sparkling crystals to 0.2 cm in size throughout matrix with minor mordenite. Quite good for the species, in good condition.

The Richardson Ranch, located near Madras in Jefferson County, Oregon, is a world-renowned agritourism and mineral locality celebrated for its abundant deposit of thundereggs, the official Oregon state rock. Geologically, the site sits on the rhyolitic volcanic flows of the Eocene-aged John Day Formation, where cooling volcanic ash and lava trapped gas bubbles that later filled with silica-rich hydrothermal fluids, precipitating chalcedony, agate, opal, and various microcrystalline quartz structures within the spherical cavities. Originally established as a working cattle ranch by the Richardson family in the early twentieth century, the owners opened the property to commercial pay-to-dig rockhunting operations around 1961 after discovering the extensive beds. While minor commercial operations occasionally extracted bulk tons for lapidary manufacturing, the ranch functioned continuously as a premier public fee-mining destination for over fifty years until high liability costs and operational shifts led to the permanent closure of the dig-your-own thunderegg beds to the general public in 2019.

Clinoptilolite is a natural zeolite mineral composed of a hydrated sodium potassium calcium aluminum silicate that forms as a devitrification product of volcanic glass in tuffs and tuffaceous sandstones. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, typically forming white to colorless, low-density tabular crystals or massive, porous blocks within sedimentary and altered volcanic strata. Due to its rigid, open framework structure containing large microscopic channels, clinoptilolite exhibits exceptional cation-exchange capacity and reversible dehydration, making it highly valuable for industrial applications including water purification, agricultural soil conditioning, odor control, and environmental remediation.
