It forms in high temperature metamorphic environments, typically in manganese rich rocks such as metamorphosed sediments or skarns. The mineral occurs as small prismatic crystals or granular masses and is usually dark brown to black in color.
Dark brown to black masses throughout this matrix. Good rich example for the species.
