A richly crystallized specimen featuring sparkling red crystalline coccinite distributed throughout the matrix, showing strong coverage and excellent representation for this rare mercury iodide mineral. This is in good overall condition. The specimen is accompanied by an antique label dating to the very early 20th century, adding significant historical provenance. According to the old label, this was once part of the collection of British collector Colonel John Wilson Rimington (1828-1909). His collection was sold at auction in the early 1890s, so one can assume that this is from the very early days of mining at Broken Hill. Broken Hill is one of the worlds most famous silver lead zinc deposits, renowned for its diverse suite of secondary silver minerals, and coccinite from this locality is highly regarded among collectors for both rarity and historical significance.
