The Northwestern Mine in Keweenaw County, Michigan, was part of the early copper mining activity on the Keweenaw Peninsula during the mid 19th century. The mine worked native copper deposits in fissure veins and amygdaloidal basalt of the Portage Lake Lava Series. Like many smaller operations in the region, it was developed with underground shafts and drifts that followed the copper bearing zones. Production was limited compared to larger mines, and operations were relatively short lived. The Northwestern Mine is part of the early history of copper mining that helped establish the industry in northern Michigan.
