description: The Champion Mine, located in Painesdale within Houghton County, Michigan, was one of the premier and longest-operating copper mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula, opening in 1899 and running under the Copper Range Company until 1967. Geologically, the mine is situated within the Mesoproterozoic Portage Lake Volcanic Series, exploiting steeply dipping amygdaloidal basalt flow tops formed inside the ancient Keweenawan Rift system. Mineralogically, it is world-famous for producing exceptional specimens of native copper filling vesicles and fractures, frequently accompanied by gangue minerals such as calcite, quartz, epidote, chlorite, and various zeolites.
Nicely crystallized native copper coming off of a small amount of matrix with quartz. In great condition.
