Copper

specimen number:
2092209

location:
Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA

description:
A branching crystallized grouping of native copper. In good condition all around. Nice miniature.

The Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan is the site of the most significant deposit of native copper in the world, located within the volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Midcontinent Rift System. Geologically, the mineralization is hosted in the Portage Lake Volcanics, where primary copper filled the gas vesicles of basaltic lava flows (amygdaloids) and the voids in interbedded conglomerates. Unlike most copper mines that extract sulfide ores, the Keweenaw was unique for its massive amounts of pure, elemental copper, including individual masses weighing hundreds of tons. Historically, indigenous peoples mined the copper for millennia before modern industrial operations began in the early 1840s, sparking the first major mineral land rush in North America. Following the successful opening of the Cliff Mine in 1845 and the later dominance of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, the region became a global leader in copper production throughout the late 19th century. Industrial mining continued for over 120 years until the last major mines, such as the White Pine, ceased primary operations in the mid-to-late 20th century, leaving behind a landscape defined by deep shafts and vast poor-rock piles that remain a testament to the Copper Country's rich geological heritage.
