location:
Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA
description: The Keweenaw Peninsula, situated in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, was home to one of the world's greatest concentrations of native copper mining. Geologically, the deposits are hosted within the Mesoproterozoic-age Midcontinent Rift System, specifically the Portage Lake Volcanics, a thick sequence of basaltic lava flows interbedded with sedimentary conglomerates. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through the cooling volcanic basin leached copper from deep strata and precipitated it as pure native copper metal within the vesicular tops of the basalt flows (amygdaloids) and the porous matrix of the conglomerates, forming massive metallic masses and sharp crystals frequently associated with silver, epidote, prehnite, and datolite. Historically, while indigenous peoples had mined the surface outcrops for thousands of years, the modern commercial boom began in 1844 with the opening of the Cliff mine, triggering America's first major mineral rush. Underground shaft mining quickly expanded, led by legendary operations like the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, which pushed shafts thousands of feet deep to extract millions of tons of copper to fuel the electrical revolution. This intense industrial production peaked between the 1860s and World War I, after which declining ore grades, high labor costs, and deep pumping requirements caused a steady contraction, leading to the closure of most major mines by the 1940s and the permanent cessation of the final corporate operations in the district by the late 1960s.
Nice crystallized branching grouping of native copper with little attached matrix. In good condition.
