The Central Mine, located in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, was one of the most famous and productive copper mines of the Lake Superior copper district, operating from its opening in 1854 until its closure in 1898. Geologically, the mine worked the Central vein, a fissure vein intersecting the regional north-dipping basalt lava flows and interbedded conglomerates of the Portage Lake Volcanics, renowned for its rich masses of native copper. Historically, the site was developed by the Pittsburgh and Boston Mining Company and became famous not only for its consistent profitability and high-grade ore, but also for its tight-knit community of Cornish miners and the annual Central Mine Homecoming reunions that continue to be held at the historic church site to this day.
