Historically, the area showed evidence of pre-settlement pit mining by indigenous peoples, while modern commercial development began during the mid-to-late 19th-century Lake Superior copper boom. The mine operated intermittently under various corporate entities, contributing to the regional production of native copper from the local amygdaloidal and fissure deposits before operations eventually ceased.
