The Kingston Mine in Keweenaw County, Michigan, was part of the historic copper mining region of the Keweenaw Peninsula, an area famous for deposits of native copper. Mining activity in the district began in the mid 1800s as companies developed underground workings to extract copper from basalt hosted fissure veins and amygdaloidal lodes. The Kingston Mine was one of several smaller operations that explored and worked these copper bearing formations. Like other mines in the region, it produced native copper along with associated minerals such as calcite, quartz, and epidote found in cavities within the volcanic rock.
