The L'Etoile du Congo Mine, also known as the Star of the Congo Mine, located in Lubumbashi within the Haut-Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of the oldest and most historically significant copper operations in the Central African Copperbelt. Mining activity by indigenous peoples and early prospectors dates back centuries, with modern industrial exploration and colonial extraction beginning in the early 1900s under the Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Roan Group, where intense weathering and oxidation of primary sulfide ore bodies created a rich supergene enrichment zone famous for producing magnificent secondary copper minerals and exceptional specimen material.
