Mogok, located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar, is world-famous as the historic epicenter of the global gemstone trade, particularly renowned for producing the finest rubies and sapphires in existence. Geologically, the area is situated within an ultra-high-temperature metamorphic belt formed during the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates, where ancient limestones and marbles were altered and intruded by granitic and syenitic magmas, creating the ideal conditions for gemstone crystallization through contact metasomatism. Mining history in the valley dates back over a millennium, transitioning from ancient royal monopolies and traditional primitive pitting methods (known as 'lwin' and 'hna-kyan') to organized colonial exploitation under British rule and eventual modern state and private operations.
