The Hall Mine, also known as the Nevada-Lyon Mine, is located in the Hall Creek District of Nye County, Nevada, and is situated within a geologically complex region of the Toiyabe Range. The deposit is primarily a porphyry molybdenum system where mineralizing fluids associated with a Late Cretaceous granodiorite intrusion created extensive stockwork veining and alteration zones. Among mineral collectors, the site is particularly distinguished for producing beautiful specimens of purple creedite, a calcium aluminum sulfate-halide mineral that typically forms as clusters of radiating, needle-like crystals or gemmy, multifaceted prisms within oxidized zones of the deposit. Historically, the area was first explored for silver and gold in the late 1800s, but significant industrial mining and quarrying for molybdenum did not begin until the mid-20th century. Major operations were conducted by the Anaconda Copper Company, which developed the site into a large-scale open-pit mine starting in 1979 and continued production through the early 1980s. Although commercial mining for molybdenum ceased by 1985 due to fluctuating market prices, the Hall Mine remains a celebrated locality for its vibrant purple creedite specimens, which are regarded as some of the finest of their species found in the United States.
