Cristobalite is a high temperature polymorph of silica that forms in volcanic environments where silica rich material crystallizes under elevated temperatures. It typically occurs as small, white to colorless crystals or as microscopic grains within volcanic rocks such as obsidian and rhyolite. Cristobalite can also form in cavities and vesicles where vapor phase processes allow for crystallization from gas rich conditions. The mineral has a relatively low density and can display a glassy to dull luster depending on its form. Because it forms at high temperatures, cristobalite is commonly associated with volcanic and fumarolic settings, and it may transform to other silica polymorphs over time as conditions change. It is of interest in both geology and industrial applications due to its thermal properties and behavior during heating and cooling.
