The Adelaide Mine, situated near the former mining settlement of Dundas in western Tasmania, Australia, has a history dating back to the late nineteenth century when the district was opened for silver and lead prospecting. Geologically, the deposit lies within a rugged mineral field where Cambrian metasedimentary and volcanic sequences intersect ultramafic rocks. The mine is world-famous for its exceptional secondary mineral formation, occurring where groundwater solutions carrying dissolved chromium from weathered serpentinites reacted with ascending lead-rich fluids from primary sulfide ores. This unique geochemical interaction produced world-class specimens of crocoite, characterized by brilliant prismatic crystals that have made the locality legendary among international mineral collectors.
