Cuprite with Copper
specimen number:
2282126
location:
Tsumeb Mine, Otjikoto, Namibia
description: The Tsumeb mine, located in the Oshikoto Region of northern Namibia, is a globally renowned polymetallic deposit famous for its unique pipe-like geometry and immense mineral diversity. Geologically, the deposit consists of an uncommonly deep, vertically plunging, pipe-shaped structure composed of intense solution-collapse breccias and feldspathic sandstone pseudomorphs that cut sharply through Precambrian-aged dolostones and limestones of the Otavi Group. This structural conduit funneled metal-rich, magmatic-hydrothermal fluids that deposited massive primary copper, lead, and zinc sulfides, which subsequently underwent multiple complex stages of deep-seated meteoric oxidation and groundwater weathering to form one of the world's most extensive suites of secondary arsenate, carbonate, and silicate minerals within large open cavities. Indigenous San and Herero tribes originally mined the surface outcrops for centuries before German colonial explorers systematically mapped the area in 1893, leading to formal corporate development in 1900 under the Otavi Minen- und Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. The mine operated with few interruptions through two World Wars and multiple corporate changes, including long-term management by the Tsumeb Corporation Limited, until a combination of labor strikes, structural flooding, and the economic exhaustion of deep ore reserves forced the permanent closure of the main underground workings in 1996.
Red acicular crystals of cuprite coming off of a cluster of crystallized native copper. Neat thumbnail for this locality.
