Cuprite with Copper
specimen number:
8311388
location:
Rubtsovsk Mine, Rubtsovsky, Altai Krai, Russia
description: The Rubtsovskiy Mine, located in the Altay Krai region of Siberia, Russia, is a remarkable polymetallic deposit situated within the Irtysh shear zone of the Rudny Altay mineral belt. Geologically, it is a volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit that underwent intense secondary enrichment, creating an exceptionally rich oxidation zone. This mine became world-famous in the mid-2000s for producing some of the finest crystallized cuprite and native copper specimens ever discovered. The cuprite typically occurs as large, lustrous, dark red octahedrons or dodecahedrons, often associated with bright, arborescent, or wire-like native copper. Historically, exploration in the area began in the 1950s, but the main period of production for the Rubtsovskoye deposit occurred between 2004 and 2011. During this brief but intense window of operation, the mine was worked primarily for silver, lead, and zinc, but the discovery of massive pockets of gem-quality cuprite transformed it into a legendary locality for mineralogists. Although commercial mining has largely ceased, the specimens recovered during its short operational life remain a gold standard for these species in the international collector market.
An aesthetic combination piece from this important Russian locality with deep red lustrous octahedral crystals of cuprite to 0.8 cm in size on a branching sharply crystallized grouping of native copper. This is in really good condition all around.
Size: 8.0 x 4.5 x 2.0 cm (small-cabinet)
