The Flintsteel Mine, located in Ontonagon County within Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is situated in a rugged region shaped by middle Keweenawan basalt lava flows that dip toward Lake Superior. Geologically, the deposit is part of the famous Portage Lake lava series, where ancient fragmental amygdaloids and fault fissures host rich deposits of native copper alongside accessory minerals like quartz, calcite, epidote, pumpellyite, and native silver. Historically, the property saw active commercial underground mining phases beginning in the 1860s and 1870s, often operating in conjunction with the neighboring Caledonia and Mass mining properties and experienced intermittent exploration and production periods into the mid-20th century.
